Introduction

News is big. In recent times, there has been a conscious activity to select, categorize and sensationalize news to forge an identity for individual newsrooms. The emphasis is now on coverage and presentation to differentiate news channels. It is all about sleek presentation, exciting visuals and speed of delivery.

With the competition hotting up and channels fighting to get a large share of viewership, TV news channels have donned a complete makeover with studied emphasis on the look and feel of the channel. The world's news industry is in transition to maintain its relevance in the expanding Information Society and its viability in the burgeoning Information economy. Thus there is a need to make a mark on the exploding market of news channels.

Market Potential

The news channels market is considered to be one of the world's most potential & lucrative market. Newsroom systems continue to be a major driving force in the implementation of new technology in the broadcast industry. Indian news channel revenues are growing by 24 percent and according to industry estimates broadcasting revenues could grow from $1 billion to $ 2.9 billion by 2007.

India first saw live news in 1991 when thousands watched CNN & BBC on big screens in Hotels, clubs and their living rooms. For decades, the state-run Doordarshan monopolized the news business. The advent of Zee News, Aaj Tak, Star News broke the monopoly. Today, the number of channels has increased to 152, of which 64 are regional channels and the thrust is on for exclusive 24 hrs News channels. The various news channels who are actively involved in the Indian news business are CNBC, NDTV, HEADLINES TODAY, SAHARA, SUN, UDAYA, CHANNEL NEWSASIA etc.

The arrival of new players in the market has prompted the technology shift from static background to dynamic background, which calls for latest and top of the line technology and equipment.
