SHOW REPORT Exhibition and Conference 2nd Biotechnology India 2000, the three-day multi-sector event
was an outstanding opportunity for companies, scientists and entrepreneurs to
interact, network and promote research and development of newer technologies in
the field of biotech. It was essentially to create a platform for
business-to-business activity to take place both in the technology as well as
commercial areas. The international exhibition and conference was inaugurated by Shri Bachi
Singh Rawat, Hon'ble Minister of State for Science and Technology and presided
over by Dr. (Mrs.) Manju Sharma, Secretary, Department of Biotechnology,
Ministry of Science and Technology, Govt. of India. In his inaugural address, Shri Rawat stated that,
"wisdom lay with
the government in taking pro-active steps and appropriate interventions to
attract sizeable investment in the biotech sector in the near future to create
competitive global industry logically. The future demand for biotech products is
estimated to grow to Rs. 15,000 crores by the year 2005." In her welcome
address Dr. Sharma said that,"
the 21st century would witness a
biotechnology based industrial revolution that will surpass all other areas and
may contribute between 40-50% of the overall industrial production." The organizers hosted an Industry Reception at the Le' Meridian Hotel on
29th November 2000. The reception was an important meeting place for
interaction between the exhibitors, industry players, members of the press and
the organizers. EXHIBITION The exhibition was an excellent opportunity for participants to make
contacts, showcase technologies, identify initiatives and forge future
collaborations and partnerships. . The major thrust of the exhibition was to
foster the commercialization of new and emerging technologies by creating
strategic alliances between inventors and the global biotech industry.
Exhibitors were satisfied by the visitor response, which included delegates and
decision-makers from ministries, governmental agencies, entrepreneurs, R&D
personnel from industry, educational institutions and academia etc. CONFERENCE The 2nd Biotechnology India 2000 conference held concurrent to
the exhibition concluded on a successful note. The conference provided an
interactive forum for experts' from the research arena to deliberate on newer
technological breakthroughs and the potential of commercializing biotech
research, with their counterparts from the industry. The invaluable
presentations and the expertise of the high profile speakers created a
pro-active and educational forum of discussion and debate. The opening day of the conference was focused on Human Genetics and
Genome Analysis, Vaccine Research and Immunology and Application of IT in
Bioinformatics. The eminent speakers included, Dr. Lalji Singh, Director, Centre
for Cellular and Molecular Biology; Dr. Leonard Klevan, President &CEO,
Hitachi Genetics System, USA; Dr. S K Brahmachari, Director, Centre for
Biochemical Technology; Mr. Jim Knight, Sr. Director- Business Development,
Asia, Genometrix, USA; Prof. G P Talwar, Founder Director NII; Dr. Satyajit Rath,
Scientist, NII; Dr. J R Arora, Advisor, Dept. of Biotechnology, GOI. Speaking on
the occasion, Dr. Brahmachari stressed the need to use IT strengths for Genome
Analysis and Drug Development. Day two of the conference focused on important themes of
"Drug Discovery Research & Technologies"; "Bioprocess
Technologies & Techniques" and "Diagnostics- New Technologies and
Development" Experts from leading Indian and foreign organizations
presented papers in these sessions. Dr. Biswajit Nag (former VP & CSO- Calyx
Therapeutics, USA) President &CEO, Bexel Biotechnology Inc., USA introduced
a proprietary biochemistry based approach different from traditional medicinal
chemistry methods for the rapid discovery of active molecules from natural
extracts that possess demonstrated pre-clinical and clinical benefits. Speaking
on the occasion on "Development of Novel Technologies for Plant Based
medicines
"Dr. Praveen Kumar Saxena, Professor, Ontario Agricultural
College, University of Guelph, Canada said, "today the global market for
medicinal plants is in billions of dollars annually, but despite their immense
popularity, plant-based medicines face a serious skepticism, which needs to be
changed" The final day of the conference concentrated on " Plant Genomics";
"Transgenic Crops and Food Security" and "Crop Protection &
Induced Resistance to Plant Disease" The sessions were chaired by Dr.
Deepak Paintal, Director, DU South Campus, Prof. V L Chopra, National Professor,
IARI and Dr. R B Barwale, Managing Director, Mahyco. According to Dr. Malathi
Lakshmikumaram of TERI, New Delhi, large scale sequencing of Arabidopsis and
rice genomes are being carried out with international collaboration on these
projects. The other eminent speakers were: Dr. K C Bansal, Principal Scientist,
NRCPB, IARI; Dr. (Mrs.) Usha Barwale Zehr, Mahyco; Dr. P Balakrishnamurthy,
Director, FIPPAT; Dr. Villoo Morawala Patell, CEO, Avestha Gengraine
Technologies Limited etc. Mr. Sharad Pawar, Member of Parliament was the special
