Riding high on convergence
March 21, 2001

India represents an optimistic picture of a convergence regime in view of its technological advances and regulatory framework in the shape of its proposed convergence communications bill, according to experts.

"With the bill to create a Communication Commission of India as a super regulator for telecom, information technology and broadcasting in the pipeline under the proposed convergence regime, India presents a case of an eye-opener," Bill Cowper, director (Asia Pacific) Sun Microsystems, said on the eve of the three-day Convergence India exhibition starting today. More than 200 companies are likely to participate in the exhibition.

Cowper added that there would be no dramatic impact of the US slowdown on the Indian companies and in other Asia-Pacific regions as the exposure of US companies in wireline and wireless firms were far low.

"There will be a significant impact of us slowdown on Indian companies as the exposure of the US firms is below 20 per cent in wireline companies and less than six per cent in wireless companies," said Cowper.

Doug Triblehorn, chief executive of Globecast, which is the broadcasting division of French Telecom, said service providers would have to offer an array of value-added services along with core services to take advantage of the convergence regime.

He said although the government was yet to enact the law on convergence, the proposed legislation seemed in tune with the development in the telecom, IT and broadcasting on a global scale.

Riding high on the optimism of convergence regime, he said globecast is opening its office in Delhi today to provide solutions to broadcasters, ISPs,content and application providers.

This three-day exhibition organised by Exhibitions India is primarily focusing on latest broadband multimedia solutions.

Some of the speakers who will be speaking at the three day event are Bill Cowper (director-Asia Pacific, Sun Microsystems), Rolf Bergman (VP, Andrew Corporation), N Vittal (CVC), Gokul Laroia (Morgan Stanley Asia Limited, Hong Kong), Amitabh Kumar (director operations, Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited).

The exhibition will also showcase broadband multimedia solutions for broadcasting content over satellite, DSL, cable, mobile, wireless, fibre and digital terrestrial networks.
