DAILY NEWS BULLETIN 12 MARCH 2000
CAPTECH 2000 "...The capacitor technology show..." INDIAN CAPACITOR INDUSTRY WILL GROW BY 30 PERCENT: BRUNO DAETWYLERWhat is the core business area of Montena?
Montena concentrates on two kinds of core businesses. One is component, mostly capacitors, and the other is lighting. Lighting includes everything which comes together with light bulbs. We trade light bulbs and manufacture equipment for light bulbs. The bigger part of our business is capacitors. We manufacture high voltage capacitors, power factor correction cabinets and power capacitors. On the other hand we manufacture equipment capable of making any kind of capacitors including AC and DC capacitors. It starts with winding machines to wind these capacitors for matellized films. We provide a complete range of assembly and manufacturing units for capacitors.
What are the operations of Montena in India?
Today Montena manufactures everything in Switzerland. In India we work with our agent Hind Plant Machinery, located at Mumbai. This company takes care of our sales in India.
The most lucrative markets for Montena are Japan and Korea. Taiwan and China are growing markets for Montena. India is becoming more and more important and we foresee a bright future here.
Do you plan to set up an office in India?
We dont have any such plans at the moment. The market in India is too small and we prefer to work with local vendors. They are familiar with the local markets, habits and culture. We have attained great success through them.
What are the factors that could boost Indian capacitor industry?
Growth potential for the local market is nearly 20-30%. The volumes are also supposed to grow at 20-25 percent. India will also face a price increase in the near future because of the short supply of material worldwide. When we talk about saturation in the Indian market, exports of capacitors can help in a big way. Today investments are taking place in China, Korea, Taiwan and other South East Asian
markets. It is a great chance for India to grab this opportunity. India has to meet global standards to compete in this very small industry.
What volume of business does Montena get from India?
We have a business of 1 (one) million Swiss Franks in India.

Captech 2000 is a very well organised show. It was really a pleasure to see an exhibition and conference like this. Captech 2000 conference has dealt with topics which were of great interest.
DuPont is associated with the capacitor industry in various ways. We are providing myla polyester films as a dielectric that is used by film capacitor manufacturers.
The Captech conference has presented a very realistic view about the Indian industry and market. It is very important for the Indian industry to team up and get into competition with the world market. There must be a solid base domestically to supply various equipment which the capacitor industry needs in India.
I am very much impressed by the good spirit of the people and I hope that everybody in this industry will keep this momentum. The conference will give new ideas which will help the industry in India.

Recommendations for the Capatitor IndustryThe market for capacitors is on the threshold of drastic changes. The biggest threat the Indian industry will face in the next few years will be the free and easy availability of the latest international capacitors either directly imported or by way of SKD, CKD or tied kits. They generally are of higher quality and may even be cheaper. Strategy to minimise stuffed PCB will have to be worked out. But that may only be a temporary respite.
The second change that will affect mainly the DC capacitor market will be the switch to SMT and the consequent change in the mix of capacitors required by equipment users. Indian manufacturers of conventional capacitors appear totally unprepared for this paradigm change.
The clear demarcation between domestic and international markets will become blurred. It is already happening in many products, including electronic equipment. It will come to capacitors also, in the next 3-5 years. Availability of internationally capacitors in India will become free and easy so that customer will not distinguish between domestic and imported brands. Certainly, they will neither be willing nor be able to give any preference to Indian brands.
Which companies in India will survive in this situation will depend upon the strategies and tactics Indian capacitor manufacturers adopt today. The suggestions made in the Strategic Study by PCTC & ELCINA should be seriously considered for implementation.
If the companys products are exportable, it can survive even if its domestic market fails. Each company will be forced to learn to export because international players are coming to India. Only those who can export will be in a position to sell even in India. If an Indian company is unable to sell internationally for whatever reason then the same constraint will prevent it from competing with imports into Indian market of the future.
A company that can sell internationally may prefer to sell in India, providing better service to Indian customers at a slight premium. The differential has to be service, which the Indian capacitor manufacturer gives to the Indian customer.
Therefore, Indian capacitor makers will need to prepare for "domestic-led export growth" rather than "export-led domestic growth" as done by smaller countries of A-P.

CTR PLASTIC FILM CAPACITORS CTR, an associate company of the Crompton Greaves group, has its electronics division at Aurangabad. Condensatures Fribourg SA, SWITZERLAND supplied the plant and machinery.Dielectrics used in the CTR capacitors are plain, metallized and double metallized versions of polyester, polystyrene, polypropylene, polycarbonate and mixed dielectrics.
Applications include general purpose, high stability, radio interference suppression, noise suppression, medium pulse, high pulse, snubber, high frequency, high voltage, CDI, ignition, sparch quenchers, commutation, regulators and any other special applications that a customer desires.
Over the years CTR has done extensive research in substitution of imported high reliability capacitors for defence, space, railways, telecommunications, nuclear science and other high-risk applications.
The electronics division is ISO 9002: 1994 accredited. For customers convenience they have zonal offices and authorised stockists spread all over the country.
SIEMENS - FIRST CHOICE PARTNER Siemens has played an active role in the technological progress witnessed in India after independence. Siemens involvement reflects the current trends in electronic and electrical technology.Besides conventional equipment, Siemens now provides state-of-the-art instrumentation and controls for power stations and other industries.
Power Capacitors: EPCOS is a broad liner in Power Capacitors spectrum to convert or control energy, be it filtering, damping, commutation, coupling or even power factor correction. The latest MKK DC series is especially suitable for modern rail traction covering a wide range from 0.1 mfd to 100,000 and up to 7,000 V.
AC Capacitors: The highest quality standards dynamic demand and sustained growth are just typical of film capacitors, as they are part of microelectronics products. EPCOS capacitors meet the demands of discerning customers by their innovative products that combine unprecedented performance with tried and tested quality.
The range includes AC polypropylene capacitor: from 250 to 600 Vac rated voltages. PFC polypropylene capacitor from 1-50 KVAr rated voltage up to 660 V. DC capacitors for information technology, telecommunication, consumer & automotive electronics.
In addition, EPCOS manufacturers a large choice of custom designed capacitors for special requirements. It also offers a wide selection of metallized film.
FILMET: HIGH VACUUM FILM METALLIZATION Filmet is a company active in the high vacuum metallization of plastic film for electrical capacitor and packaging applications. The company was established in 1963. Since then it has taken technological evolution as a challenge. During these years the company followed an innovative approach to the production management and developed quality system in order to reach the state of the art technology and ensure to the customers the top quality of metallized film.
FILMET "Zinc Alloy" is a high vacuum metallized film obtained by composition of aluminium + zinc + (silver). This film exalts the particular characteristics of aluminium and zinc, avoiding the most restrictive aspects of the single elements. Metallizing process takes place by simultaneously evaporating, from separate sources, the metals that condense on the film.
